About Us
Where the spirit of Óbuda still lives on today!
Our Restaurant’s Story
If you ever stroll along the cobblestone streets of Óbuda, you might come across a green gate from which delicious aromas drift out.
That’s Vidocq Restaurant — a piece of the past that has found its home in the present.
The story of this place goes back to the 1970s.
According to an old account, when the restaurant first opened, its founders were inspired by a popular French TV series of the time: the main character, Vidocq, was a former burglar who became a police chief.
He represented courage, transformation, and the richness of human stories — much like the restaurant itself.
Vidocq soon became a favorite among locals in Óbuda. Guests often said, “time stands still here” — and indeed, the whitewashed brick walls, green furniture, and the scent of the wine cellar all take you back to the charm of old Hungarian taverns.
The kitchen has always served generous portions: palm-sized breaded cutlets, half-liter soups, and homestyle flavors prepared with the same love and care to this day.
But it’s not only the food that brings guests back.
Many remember evenings when a beloved Hungarian song echoed from the cellar, creating a warm atmosphere that united everyone at the tables.
Vidocq has always been more than just a restaurant — it’s a meeting place where hospitality is still personal, time moves a little slower, and every smile is genuine.
Even after several decades, our goal remains the same:
to make every guest feel the unique harmony of past and present.
To keep the spirit of old Óbuda alive — not only as a memory, but as an experience you can relive again and again.
